News > But, Will This Grass Sprout in Drought? - 2002
Mark Matthews, Orlando Sentinel, June 14, 2002

Lake County residents may not have any water to drink in a few years, but at least their lawns will survive.

That is, if Commissioner Bob Pool has anything to say about it.

At a County Commission meeting Tuesday, the board chairman invited two lawn gurus to present a strain of supergrass that can survive oppressive droughts, surprise freezes and even manic children.

“We've abused it in every manner possible,” said presenter Jim Granger.

“You can't kill it.”

One of the biggest advantages of the EMPIRE® Zoysia breed, he said, is its resistance to drought.

It has a durability that can survive under the direst conditions, even a water shortage that some experts predict will drain Central Florida of its drinkable water supply by 2006.

“As the chairman, I'm trying to show the public that there are creative alternatives to reduce our impact on the aquifer and save water,” Pool said.
